There's also an interview done by local guitarist Rick Bishop (Sun City Girls, who did some of the music for Mister Lonely) in the current Bomb magazine.

This brings to mind a recent New Yorker article (abstract available here - http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/04/07/080407fa_fact_brody) by Richard Brody on the (in)famous break-up of Truffaut and Godard. The article, published in the April 7, 2008 issue, gives special attention to the differences in the ways each director approached the relationship between politics and film.

I would guess the filmmaker leans left. His main concern in making the film was the decided lack of moral responsibility and historical revisionism on the part of many of the people who flock to Yasukuni to remember and celebrate the war dead.

The object of veneration at the shrine is a sword. The shrine itself manufactures ceremonial swords. Swords that were used by the Japanese army in its occupation of China and during WWII. So, for example, Li talks with his main subject, an old swordmaker, about the use of his swords. Li puts in archival footage of beheadings of innocent Chinese civilians in the 1930s. It's an old question of where the lines of responsibility lay. With the perpetrator? With the commander? With the person who manufactured the weapon?

It seems the right wing would rather crush any attempt at meaningful discussion, rather than face the hard soul searching that should be done.

Li likens the problem to a disease. It's not killing the infected (Japanese society) but it's making it very sick.

Adam: It is always an exciting day when Cannes announces their line-up. We know we can look forward to seeing so many of their great films in the coming months. Just this year from January through April in Seattle we have seen 4 MONTHS 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS, PARANOID PARK, MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS, BOARDING GATE and CHOP SHOP. And coming in just nine days the best of the lot FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON and LOVE SONGS. I would give (at least) a finger to see the new films by the Dardennes, Desplechin and Garrel this May rather than next year, but I'll have to make do with SIFF instead.

Calling All Filmmakers!
Our production team is seeking filmmakers to document our May Day extravaganza, and we would love to have you join us!

We are looking for 4 or so hours of you and your camera's time on Thursday May 1st in the late afternoon/evening to document this interactive public performance. Please join us in celebrating whimsy, dance, and cake in the streets of downtown Seattle on May 1, 2008.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The two-hour performance is unabashedly celebratory, evocative of the embarkation of a grand ocean liner of the early 20th century. Ooo La La is a free interactive public performance spectacular! Perfumed by the decorative exoticism of art deco coupled with the surrealist tendencies of the Jazz Age, this May Day confection celebrates sweets, romantic love, and the act of wishing.

LOCATIONS
Occidental Square: the dancers dance and throw a party dressed as bakers. The atmosphere is fun and festive. The bakers give away whole cakes to audience members.

Pioneer Square to Harbor Steps: Led by marching bands of bakers, along with groups of giggling dancing cakes, dancers parade through the city along three different routes from Pioneer Square to the Harbor Steps. At stop lights, dances erupt on sidewalks, inviting pedestrians and cars into the merriment.

Harbor Steps: As described in project description.

CONTACT
Andy McCone at andy@mccone.net or 206-819-5138 (www.imdb.com/name/nm1763677/)
Performance date: Thursday, May 1, 2008 (First Thursday); Occidental Square festivities kick off at 5 pm, Harbor Steps show begins at 6 pm.

Ooo La La is envisioned and created by Lucia Neare, with theatrical direction by Cathy Madden, musical direction by Matt Goodrich. and technical direction by David Verkade. Ooo La La is supported by 4Culture and GGLO.
