DID I MENTION THAT THIS IS A RARE SHOWING OF A TRULY COMEDIC GEM THAT’S NOT AVAILABLE ON DVD OR VIDEO?!
I was lucky enough to see this film at the Secret Festival over 5 years ago. It’s one of those films where you miss a lot of the lines, due to the fact you’re still laughing at the line before it! By the end of the film the Egyptian was boiling hot, due to the packed house continually exhaling due to all the laughter! (We need to start a campaign to get this put out on DVD!) Basic plot: Girl runs away from comfortable white suburban home, so her parents (Dad is played by one of the Comedy Gods–Buck Henry!) voyage forth to find her. (While exposing the ironic underbelly of American culture in a truly satiric and amazing way. Think AMERICAN BEAUTY, MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN, and one of my favorite novels, THE SERIAL (FILM 911: NO ONE should EVER see the filmic mess they made of THAT though–I still have nightmares!))
The scene where the parents get together to try and understand their children by experiencing this “drug thing” that they’ve heard so much about —Oh God! It still is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen! You will never be able to hear “Don’t Bogart the joint” line without seeing the pot scene from this film in your head. Yes, other films may have TRIED the “Show the squares how us hipsters party!” scene, but NONE of them come close to the incisive, comedic genius of Milos and crew on this film. We REALLY need this classic on DVD! But since you can’t watch it any other way now–GET YOUR ASS TO THE THEATRE!!
(Also recommended, the documentary FOG CITY MAVERICKS (a STARZ original film–yes, the dreaded cable!) on selected directors who have changed film who are based in the San Francisco area, featuring Mr. Forman.)
